For all of you who celebrate Rosh Hashana:
May you and your family have a New Year filled with light and love. The apples and honey on our tables bring a promise that a sweet new year is possible for us, our brothers and sisters in Israel, the Jewish people and all people over the world. Praying that the New Year will start with the hostages returning to the loving embrace of their families.

Nathan's Journal is both heart wrenching and inspiring as high school football player Nathan tries to come to grips with the loss of his dream to play football. After he was injured in the game, he lost his ability to speak, to walk and to use his hands. The author, Thom Ring, is well equipped to understand, having worked for over 30 years with adult and teenager survivors of traumatic brain injury and covering sports as a reporter for daily newspapers in New England. Nathan is an angry young man who struggles, falls and keeps on getting up. His determination is an encouragement to us all.

Charcuterie Boards are a great way to serve appetizers for company and I had a lot of fun putting the board together, making it attractive (add color!) with a lot of variety, from meat to veggies to accompaniments, such as cut up raw, marinated or pickled veggies, and sweet along with savory. I used my regular cutting board—there’s no reason to buy expensive boards. Typically, charcuterie boards are served as appetizers but certainly can be served as a simple meal, as it was for the working classes in the Middle Ages. With no refrigeration, cured meats were practical ways to supplement fresh meats. These delicious boards made their way to the wealthier classes and became part of our menus, especially with informal entertaining. Mix up flavors and textures and add a little crunch: the only requirement is that all items should be easy to pick up!
